City of Angels

Bangkok spreads out below me. The view from above is prettier, if somewhat worse labelled, than the Nancy Chandler version. Drops of lights pump through her wide arteries. Bangkok is still in party mode, and I think you can tell, even from a few thousand feet.
I float above the floating lights below.
City of Angels [...]

Songkran

Take 60 million Thai. Give every man, woman and child a bucket of water, and/or a water gun, and/or a bucket of whitewash. Give everyone a few pints of Singha. Give every second person a bottle of whiskey. Turn every street-facing building into a discotheque. Add three days of public holidays. You can probably see [...]

Home?

I’m back in Bangkok. Made friends with the lovely Catrina (NSW) on the flight from Saigon, and after a slightly more stressful than usual taxi ride, we’re staying at the Asha guesthouse in central-ish Bangkok. Apparently we’re somewhere close to Poenchit station, which will make getting around really easy over the next two days. I [...]

Goodbye, Chiang Mai

Had a great time with St. Patrick’s day, last night. I played two hands of switch with a group of Irishmen and women, and came out 200B ahead. Paid for my drinks all night. Also headed to the rockin’ Heaven Beach bar, with the best cover band I’ve seen in ages. They played Teen Spirit [...]

Pai

It doesn’t take much to remind us that we, the invincible backpackers, are actually quite fragile. My friend Dafne is in the Chiang Mai private hospital with some kind of fever, tonight, after what sounds like an awfully uncomfortable night in Pai. She still has a high fever, and is absolutely exhausted after a few [...]

Awanderin’

Just spent the last three days strolling through the jungle. Had a fantastic time, in general, and got to know my Hua Lumphong friends a little better. Anja, Jo, Dafne and I were together for pretty much all of the time. We were joined for the first day of the trek by the lovely Chris [...]

Chilli Club Tuesday

I spent this morning at the Chilli Club cooking academy with my new friends Dafne (Basque) and Anja (German). We started with a trip to a local market to buy ingredients, before starting on some serious cooking. Between us, we cooked red, green and yellow curries, stir fried vegetables, pork and pad thai, sticky rice, [...]

Chiang Mai Espresso

Spent the afternoon wandering Chaing Mai. It really is a great little place – everyone smiles as you pass and the dogs hardly ever chase (for long).

Made some friends at Hua Lumphong station, and we’re all staying together here. Anja of Germany, Dafne of Spain, Marika of Holland, and one fellow anglophone, Jo [...]

Chiang Mai Express

I’m in the lovely city of Chiang Mai, at the Eagle 2 guesthouse. Cooking class tomorrow morning, and a three day hill-trek starting Wednesday. See you on the other side!

Khao San

I’ve found myself a guesthouse for the night on Th. Khao San, Bangkok. It’s hot and smoggy, but pretty interesting. My room itself is small, cool and comfortable. I’ll be here for a night or two, and then I’ll try and find somewhere cheaper in a more interesting part of the city.
I’ve only been walking [...]
