Vienna is an alive city. Every corner seems to have a band, and the streets are teeming.
I started today by wandering District 1 for a few hours, and then went to the Leopold Museum in the Museumsquartier. It contains a collection of Egon Schiele’s paintings and sketches, which I’ve been [...]
Kiskassa has just shot to the top of my ‘places to work when I run out of rail pass’ list. Kate and I arrived mid-afternoon after a few hours train from Budapest, a wander through downtown Pecs and forty-minute bus ride out to the village. Kiskassa has one street, maybe two hundred and eighty residents [...]
This will be my last night in Budapest for a while. In the morning I’m headed south to a village near Pecs, to spend a few days relaxing on a farm. I’m hoping I’ll get a chance to do some riding or maybe hiking, depending on the terrain. I’ll be back in the city on [...]
Transylvania photoset is here. More to come.
The ‘Up and Left Tour’, which at its peak consisted of Paul, Kate, Tash, Ben, Barney, Lori and myself, has split. Paul and Tash, with their superior passports, are headed up into the wilds of Moldova. Lori has a schedule and fled for Budapest a few days ago. Ben and Kate both have flights to [...]
When attacked by a grizzly, play dead. If it’s a black bear, make loud noises. Or is it the other way around? I can never remember.
Transylvania is painfully beautiful. I’ve wasted endless shots from train windows, only to delete them in disappointment because they can’t capture the right shade of green, the right thickness of [...]
Every day is a good day.
Eight of us (the aforementioned party of six, with newly acquired Canadian, Rich, and sometimes-companion Lori of Scotland) took two cars to the site of the tomb of Vlad Tepes (a.k.a. Vlad III the Impaler, a.k.a. Vladislav Dracula, a.k.a. Count Dracula). Getting to the church required forty minutes of [...]
I’ve slowed down on the blogging recently because I haven’t been travelling much. Also, haven’t had much inspiration for photography, but here are some pictures of the Black Sea, a gold-domed cathedral and some salad:
I spent three nights in Varna with my new companions (and some old ones): Paul (Ireland), Kate, Tash, [...]

This is my last night in Veliko Tarnovo, where I’ve been since Friday. Everybody from Hiker’s in Plovdiv is here, so I’ve spent much of the last few days with Steph and Sarah (Shropshire, U.K.) and Hayley and Bridget (Tasmania).
Veliko Tarnovo is an ancient town built on the slopes of a steep gorge. The centrepiece [...]
Just another day wandering Plovdiv, cooking, and jazz. The girls and I cooked up quite the spread for tea, then later went out for icecream and in doing so stumbled upon a big band playing in a Roman amphitheatre (can you imagine actually stumbling upon a big band?).
