I spent this morning at the Chilli Club cooking academy with my new friends Dafne (Basque) and Anja (German). We started with a trip to a local market to buy ingredients, before starting on some serious cooking. Between us, we cooked red, green and yellow curries, stir fried vegetables, pork and pad thai, sticky rice, [...]
Spent the afternoon wandering Chaing Mai. It really is a great little place – everyone smiles as you pass and the dogs hardly ever chase (for long).
Made some friends at Hua Lumphong station, and we’re all staying together here. Anja of Germany, Dafne of Spain, Marika of Holland, and one fellow anglophone, Jo [...]
I’m in the lovely city of Chiang Mai, at the Eagle 2 guesthouse. Cooking class tomorrow morning, and a three day hill-trek starting Wednesday. See you on the other side!
Happiness is a bag of deep-fried bananas and a train ticket to Chiang Mai. Departing 19:35, arriving 09:45 – quite the epic. Can’t wait. Suffering a tiny bit of Bangkok overload, at the moment.
This is the green stuff:
Chatachuk photos here.
Had a lovely, fresh and spicy lunch at the Vientiene kitchen, off Th. Sukhumvit. [...]
On Friday morning, I bought a compass and strung it onto Ebony’s bracelet like a bead. Turns out to be the best investment I’ve made since I got here – feels as good as a GPS.
Took a local line boat to Tha Tien and then across the river to Wat Arun. The view [...]
Visted Wat Pho yesterday afternoon, my first touristy trip. The experience of simply convincing a tuk-tuk driver that I wanted to go direct, and not receive a full-city tour, has almost put me off tuk-tuks altogether. I’ll probably stick to taxis, for now.
I walked home to Banglamphu. A good walk, even if I did get [...]

I’ve found myself a guesthouse for the night on Th. Khao San, Bangkok. It’s hot and smoggy, but pretty interesting. My room itself is small, cool and comfortable. I’ll be here for a night or two, and then I’ll try and find somewhere cheaper in a more interesting part of the city.
I’ve only been walking [...]

Twenty minutes til boarding. The sense of having forgotten something important is probably due to the fact that for the first time in years, I’m carrying neither keys nor telephone.
Anxiety: 3/10. Excitement: 10/10. B.A.C.: estimating 0.025. Probably accounts for the low anxiety score.
Can’t wait. See you in Bangkok.

Oh, these days of bacon.
I’m in Brisbane. I think this is home. Two days ago I flew from Townsville; tonight I fly to Bangkok.
It’s funny how my bacon consumption increases by about 3700% when I’m having a good time. Sunday morning, breakfast with the night’s survivors – a Les Miserables last supper, if you will. [...]
